[Bobby knew she shouldn't leave the apartment. Everyone kept telling her not to. But the deep down part of her that always had to know, had to see for herself couldn't just sit by when all this was happening.
She waited until she was alone before sneaking out, a few tins of food and a kitchen knife tucked into her bag. It was easy as anything to speak past the man in the front lobby and make it outside.
It didn't take long before she found him. He'd be looking for her, he's always looking for her. And he tells herself she isn't afraid when she sees the top hat and tails come out from the darkness.]
[Meyer doesn't exactly want to be out, but he is, because more than being afraid, he's curious. He wants to know what's going on. And he hasn't seen anyone from home yet, either, which perplexes him. So as he's wandering, gun close at hand, he sees Bobby -- and the ghoul.
He approaches quietly, not wanting to startle anyone.]
[She tucked the knife into the waistband of her pants, hopefully hidden enough that he won't be able to see. He looks the same as he always does for a show - black hair and black goatee and top hat and tails. Except a blood stain is spreading slowly across the breast, staining the crisp white fabric red.
She expects him to talk. He always talks, a million things to say and opinions to give out, but he doesn't now. Maybe she's supposed to begin.]
Father-
[But before she begins any excuses she's been planning since she arrived here he interrupts her.]
[There's no way in hell Meyer is going to stand back and let a little kid get killed by a ghoul that might just have been created by the City to scare people. No way. He doesn't know yet whether these things can inflict damage, but it seems like a better policy to shoot first and ask questions later.
So he pulls his gun from his jacket, aims it cooly, and fires at the lunging man.]
[She doesn't startle much when the gun fires, but she uses the distraction to run back. She doesn't know where the shot came from, she can't see in the haze so she just runs from all of it.
Her heart is beating a storm and she doesn't know why. Hasn't she known it would come to this, some way some way? That's why she has the gun at home.
She runs until she hits a brick wall, breathing heavily, and turns to see if he's still following her.]
[The ghoul may or may not be following her -- Meyer hasn't turned around to check, which he knows goes against everything he's been taught about keeping someone in your line of sight at all times -- but Meyer certainly is, right behind her, making sure she's not running into more danger.]
Bobby. It's okay.
[Not that is particularly seems okay. Especially not to Bobby, probably.]
[But that's not killing him, and Meyer knows it. Even if the shot was good, even if it was well aimed, right into the ghoul's chest -- he never goes for a headshot, it's too risky -- that doesn't mean the thing died.]
[He pauses, frowns. He always thinks things through carefully, but right now, they need to be moving as he thinks, so he starts heading down a street, looking around, hand still on his gun.]
I don't know if they can get inside. We should try inside first.
